Building and Site Description

Rising on high foundations, the house at 1417 Middlefield Road occupies the southwest portion of

a large lot at the northwest corner of Middlefield Road and Beech Street. The house is a Victorian era

Italianate cottage, one-story over basement with an attic. Built c.1883 (San Mateo County

Assessor’s Office estimate) the dwelling at 1417 Middlefield is one of the neighborhood’s best

examples of the Italianate Style, popular during the mid-nineteenth century. The structure’s

raised floor plate lent the owners stature and also served a practical purpose: to avoid periodic

flooding in a marshy area.
